Identification of Students:
Students whose student enrollment or home language forms indicate a language other than English are assessed, using the AZELLA (Arizona English Language Learner Assessment).
Evaluation of Students:
ELL students are usually evaluated once each school year to determine their level of English proficiency. The AZELLA (Arizona English Language Learner Assessment) is the assessment required by the Arizona Department of Education.
Placement of Students:
Students whose AZELLA proficiency levels are Pre-Emergent, Emergent, Basic or Intermediate receive English instruction.
Instruction:
In the EL classroom, students receive intensive English instruction in the areas of reading, writing and grammar for two class periods per day. Utilizing Individual Language Learning Plans (ILLPs), SEI trained exploratory and science teachers provide additional EL instruction during two class periods per day.
To Exit the Program:
To exit the EL program, students must perform at the Proficient level on the AZELLA. Once a student has exited the program, he/she will be monitored by the EL Teacher twice each year during the following two years to assure continued success. During this time, students will also be tested with the AZELLA each spring.
